I have a family tradition every year on July 4th. We all know that July 4th is the Independence day. Many celebrate this holiday differently. Me and my mother reach out to our close ones in the family, this is because we do not often see our family every year. So we figured July 4th is the special day every year to bring the loved ones and family together. I see my family quite often, our get togetherness are very entertaining. I believe family matters, the way I show others in my life that they actually matter to me is a big blessing. I am committed to making sure that I prepare the time being of this special day. My family get together is taken place in Carrolton Georgia, Carrolton Beach.
Me and my mother usually send letters or make a phone call a week before our event. My family responds and then we write a list of names of all the family members that can attend. When the actual day comes, I would find a spot in the shade where there are tables because usually it’s really hot out around this time. It’s summer. After finding the spot, me and my mom set up a grill to grill hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, ribs, and more. We also bring a huge cooler full of drinks to keep us hydrated. Once the family have arrived we all sit down and talk, share memories, and bless the food and all eat together. When coming out to the beach, me and my cousins would go down and play in the water. My mom, mainly the older adults would sit at the tables and watch us play or continue talking. Our event usually lasts from the morning to the sun set. We all play board games such as monopoly, sorry, or candy land. Monopoly is a popular game among us. My mom usually gives out $50 to the special winner of the game. There is another game I like to play with my family. We get a card and this card would have a word on it. My mom hides the meanings around the area we are sitting in, therefor when she says “Go” the family gets up and see who could get the most cards and find the actual meaning. This surprise is $100. I had only won this game twice. Usually it would be the adults to find these types of things but this was always my favorite game.
Families are said to be the root of every living soul. The meaning tells the family what basically brought us together this day, what gave us life, and what shaped our values. Family is what keeps us on our feet that may be our supportive system. What brings my family close is all about having fun. Every year is a blessing to be able to enjoy this moment. We all love to hear the sound of waves, the sand surrounding our feet, and tanning out in the beautiful sun. The beach for my family is a place seen to be relaxation and peaceful. This is something we all do not get to enjoy often.
When our day is over, the family dances to two songs called the “Cha cha slide” and “Cupid Shuffle”. The dances are really easy and fun. We all laugh, and might mess up a few times on the moves. Dancing to these songs is a great way of exercising. One thing I’ve learned from my family is not being able to imagine living without them. My family is very important and valuable to me that should not be taken for granted. Without family, a large part in my life of culture would be missing whether it’s my mother, grandparents, siblings, or cousins and uncles. I’ve shared lots of moments every year celebrating July 4th with my family.
